Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance including:

keeping the work area clean

selecting and wearing appropriate protective clothing and equipment

conduct pre-operating checks

conducting periodic maintenance on chain blocks, comealongs and crane hoists

examining hooks, shackles, slings, straps and baskets

assembling rust scaling equipment

assembling surface preparation equipment correctly

ensuring safety pins are in air hose fittings

applying rust treatment undercoat/final coat correctly

reporting immediately any malfunction or equipment failure

works effectively with others to undertake and complete carry out equipment and basic rig maintenance tasks that meets all the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

report regularly to and work as directed by the driller/derrickman timely and efficiently

demonstrates completion of equipment and basic rig maintenance that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

correctly performs maintenance on a minimum of three (3) pieces of plant or equipment

checking, identifying and reporting defects on rigging equipment

cleaning and preserving equipment on completion

applying numerical skills, to calculate measurements, mass, load dimensions and safety working loads


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge carrying out equipment and basic rig maintenance through:

applying organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

written work instructions company and statutory guidelines, procedures and practices

safe operating procedures and practices

rig maintenance procedures including:

chain blocks, comealongs and crane hoist maintenance procedures identifying and using surface preparation equipment

identifying safety pins and air hose fittings

identifying paint types and applications

using equipment cleaning and preservation techniques

complying with platform cleaning procedures

identifying required rust treatment and applications

company equipment maintenance procedures

work health and safety procedures and individual obligations

utilising a range of communication methods, including:

two-way radio

intercom

verbal

hand signals

telephone

public address system

normal drilling operations

non-routine drilling operations
